There have been some exciting new developments at the Southern Utah University campus in Cedar City, UT, where a Zwick Construction team has been working on the new Business Building-West addition.

Designed to tie-in to the existing business building, the Business Building-West addition will feature several classrooms, program and study rooms, sales center, common spaces, and faculty offices. The two buildings will be connected through a skybridge.

Currently, teams have been busy laying the groundwork for this important center of learning. Over the past few months, teams demolished the existing building and landscaping, then poured the concrete footings and foundations. Since February, the team has focused on completing the site utilities and standing the structural steel throughout the building. With those steps complete, they’ve already begun pouring most of the concrete decking on the floors. In early March, they’ll install the trusses.

All of that progress hasn’t come without its challenges. First, the project sits on a relatively small property. With such limited space for laydown and staging, the team has gotten creative on how to use the space. They’ve stored materials off-site, scheduled timely deliveries, and worked with their trade partners to have those firms hold on to the materials as long as possible.

Next, the street adjacent to the SUU Business Building-West is an extremely busy thoroughfare for students. This makes entrances and exits from the site tricky. Prioritizing safety, the team is careful to ensure deliveries are coordinated, especially during less-busy times.

Last, during the early phases of construction, the team faced many unknowns, especially with the existing building and property. Within days of demolition, the team discovered unidentified utilities and steam tunnels underneath the property. Owing to hard work and consistent coordination with their trade partners, they were able to remove both in a timely manner.

We recognize the entire team for their work. The SUU Business Building-West represents one of many projects Zwick Construction has worked on at the campus over the years. This team and previous teams have built a relationship of trust with the SUU faculty since the first project years ago.
