Every mid-summer, Southern Utah University hosts the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, UT. This is a summer-long event that presents plays and musicals for regional and national audiences. In 2019, Zwick Construction worked with the Utah Shakespeare Festival team to provide some improvements to the center of festival activities, the Zions Bank Courtyard. The centerpiece of the capital is the 35-foot clocktower.
Zwick performed major improvements on the plaza, gift shop and snack shop/concession stand. Each were updated with new window paneling and interior improvements. The project included updated landscaping, including board-formed planter boxes that give the appearance of rough-sawn wood, a base for the statue of Fred Adams, the founder of Utah Shakespeare Festival, and other beautiful features. These improvements made the site ADA-compliant.
Even with a relatively-simple scope, our team ran into challenges with the amount of rainwater. In the year 2019, Cedar City received 20% more moisture than in an average year. To overcome the extra moisture, the team had to pump water and snow out of the area. An additional challenge was making sure to keep the students and personnel of the university safe during construction. The team put up extra fences and barriers to ensure their safety.
Even with those challenges, the team completed the project on schedule, right in time for the festival. The entire project spanned three months.
Congratulations to the project team for delivering this project! The owners were extremely pleased with the completed improvements.
