An Addition to Learning

In a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in mid-March, the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and School worshipers, staff, and students expressed gratitude for the new Taylorsville, UT addition to their school, built by Zwick Construction.

A Zwick Construction Tenant Improvement Division project, this expansion aimed to expand the existing K-8 school by increasing the number of classrooms and remodeling the administrative spaces within the building. The 14,000 SF addition features over a dozen classrooms with a tie-in on both levels of the building. Happy students and staff celebrated moving out of temporary portables the same week and occupying the new space.

By nature of its location on a busy student campus, this remodel required extra consideration by the project team to keep those students safe and class schedules undisrupted. During preconstruction, the team devised a plan that allowed deliveries and construction personnel to enter the site from the west side, totally avoiding students. This safe approach helped prevent disturbances to student learning.

And by nature of a remodel, this team faced various challenges from unknowns within the existing building. In each case, the team got to work sending RFIs to the architect and coming up with possible solutions for each issue.

Before construction, the preconstruction team collaborated with the architect and owner to meet their strict budget. They presented the solution to replace the original brick veneer design with stucco on the upper half and CMU on the lower half. Not only did this option save the owner a significant amount of money, but it also showed cohesion to the existing building since the church next door is stucco and the gym is CMU.
